Following a recent conversation about the origins of a relative, maps were obtained that had specific personal relevance to my families settlement over a few generations. I was interested to look at the lay of the land around where people that I was related to lived and worked, and to place my own life in relation to theirs.
Stamping over each square mile of the first map with the text origin made reference to my own personal origin, but also highlights that each square mile has a relevance to the origins of many more people spanning many generations. People to who I am not related, people who are no longer here, people who are not here yet and people who have moved away and in doing so have created a web between other locations on numerous maps that potentially span the entire world.
An origin is not a single or specific place, we each have countless and shared origins that relate back through time, covering many square miles on numerous maps.
Origins can exist physically but also occupy space within our minds, these being houses, towns, districts, counties and countries, all of which come together to form a sense of self origin.
