The ‘Hope Maps’ series have been living as an idea in a notes app on my phone for some while now. The idea followed carving a rubber stamp and then considering how it could be used to express my feelings about the recent political landscape in Suffolk.
I have already made a piece of performance video ‘Suffolk SOS’ about this, but felt that a paper based work was where I wanted to go next, to express something beyond the distress that I felt when Reform won the majority of Suffolk County Council.
While ‘Suffolk SOS’ encapsulated my horror and dismay, I have started to look further into the future, and with looking to the future I am feeling hopeful, that the political barometer may once again swing to more liberal and progressive feeling within our counties population.
Of course there is the argument that I may be experiencing false hope, but I do feel that without hope at all it becomes increasingly difficult to bring about positive change.
